In May we decided to take a trip out to Kansas and check things out. We had pretty much decided on Washburn, but we wanted to check it out, check out the housing, and just make sure it's where we wanted to go. Right before we left, we heard back from University of Kansas and Ben had been accepted and offered a scholarship there, so since the two schools are only about 30 minutes away from each other, we decided to check out both schools. KU is in Lawrence which is a really cute little town. It is definitely a college town and has a cute little main street, similar to Park City. We enjoyed visiting there, and thought we might like KU. However, once we met with the admissions director and toured the school, we didn't really like it. We just didn't have a great feeling about it, it didn't feel like our home for the next few years. And we were not impressed with the admissions director. Once he found out we were considering Washburn, his whole approach was tearing down Washburn, instead of building up KU's program. It wasn't about why their program was great and why we should choose them, it was why Washburn sucked and why we shouldn't choose them. It really bothered us, and just left us with a bad taste. We drove back to Topeka and met with the admissions director of Washburn, had a tour of the school, and just loved it. It just felt right. We decided for sure that's where we wanted to go and never looked back. We still believe this is where we are supposed to be.
Ben's uncle John and his family live in Topeka so we were fortunate to have a place to stay with them. They were so excited for us come out and even more excited for us to move out. They are great people and just made us feel so welcome and loved. We were excited to know someone and to have insiders to show us the ropes.
We started our journey Friday night after work, dropped Payson off at my parents house, and drove to Cheyenne where we found a hotel and stayed the night. The next day we drove the rest of the way to Topeka and got there late that night. Sunday we were fortunate enough to go to the Kansas City Missouri Temple dedication. Everyone around here was so excited for the temple. It's only an hour away instead of the next closest temple being 3 hours away in Omaha, Nebraska. It was a really neat experience and we were so glad to be there for it. It is very significant being built where there is so much Church history.
We spent Monday touring the two schools and deciding on Washburn. We started driving around looking for places to live and spent most of Tuesday doing the same. We finally found a house that we loved! It is close to campus, it's big and spacious, and we were thrilled when we were able to rent it. It was a fun quick little trip and we felt good about all that we were able to accomplish. On Wednesday we drove all the way home in one day. It was a long drive! Poor Ben was so tired, but he's a rock star and did great. I took at least 3 naps. I get sooo sleepy in the car! I'm not a very good traveling partner. Good thing Ben loves road trips. We listened to the Hunger Games books on tape while we drove and had a backseat full of snacks. It was a fun little get away just the two of us and we had a lot of fun.
One thing I love to do is take pictures! Especially of us. It's drive Ben crazy. Especially if I don't like what we take and have to do it over, and over, and over again. Eventually I get the thumbs down. :)
I love this man and love spending time with him!
