In November of 2011 Grandpa Rhodes wanted to get the family together and do a fireside. I truly believe he was aware that his time on earth was getting shorter. It was such a blessing to us to have this opportunity to hear Grandpa speak. He talked of his life growing up, his college days with his sweetheart Carol, and he told us of the life they had built together. He told us of their conversion, and how they had come to know the gospel of Jesus Christ. He talked about how hard of decision it was for him to get baptized because, although he knew it was true, he felt he was going against his family who had been part of the baptist ministry for generations. It was fascinating to hear this amazing man tell his life story. As you can tell from the pictures, he was in the Military. He was a Major in the Marines. (He should have been a Colonel but was passed up twice because he was"mormon" and he was told those exact words.) He told us stories about his time across seas, fighting in the wars. At one point he was taken prisoner, and told us the amazing story of their escape, which happened only by the power of God. He had never told anyone in his family his war stories. Even Grandma had never knew he was taken prisoner. This was the first time he ever spoke about it. Again, I am so grateful he shared that with us. The spirit was so strong, as he testified of God and His Son Jesus Christ. It was an unforgettable night.
All the great grandkids and some of the grandkids got their own fatigues, complete with tags and everything. They all sang the Marine Corp hymn. Payson loved it, and marched right up front and held his flag high! He still loves to listen to that song on my phone and he'll just march around singing it.
We love Grandpa so much! We are so grateful for the life he lived, the legacy he has left, and the wonderful example he has given us of how to live our own lives. This night was very special to us and we are so thankful to everyone who put it together and made it happen.

There are no words that can be expressed to describe the legacy this man left. He is one of the main reasons I am in Law School. I could not be more proud to also reside in his home state as well. I love my Grandfather and still think of the lessons and example he left everyday. I am happy that he is now with Kynslee and E.J.Two Grandchildren of his have him back in their arms again.
Teea, I am sorry about your Grandpa. He sounds like a neat man. Thoughts and prayers are with you and Ben at this time.
